Nightrun Garage Spec Coilovers: Worth it?

A moody, grainy photo of coilovers laying on polished concrete

If you're shopping coilovers for your project car, weekend driver, or daily, you've almost certainly heard of Fortune Auto. Based just outside of Richmond, Virginia, Fortune Auto coilovers offer one of the best value propositions in aftermarket suspension. Throughout their nearly 20-year history, they have become a default recommendation for owners who want real adjustability without jumping to full-blown motorsport pricing. Because of this reputation and our convenient proximity, Nightrun Garage had the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with Fortune Auto to develop our own take on what a coilover should feel like for the cars we love.

So, what’s changed from Fortune’s standard spec?

The short version: it's the same dampers and the same factory, but Nightrun has developed our own valve codes, tested and validated spring rates, and optimized the extended and compressed lengths for maximum wheel travel without rubbing or scrubbing at a wide range of ride heights. Rather than doing all this work and then selling one kit, we built out multiple packages with meaningful names to provide a streamlined buying experience.

A great foundation

Fortune Auto's entry-level coilover system is the tried-and-true 500 series, with the 510 series sitting a step above. Both share the company's core philosophy: custom, modular, rebuildable. A few things define the standard experience:

  • Built to order, every time. Nothing ships off a shelf. You pick an application, choose spring rates, and the shock is assembled and dyno-tested to match. This means a slightly longer lead time than competitors, but it’s worth the wait.

  • Digressive piston valving. The 500 Series uses Fortune Auto's High Flow Digressive (HFD) piston; the 510 steps up to the Concave Flow Digressive (CFD) piston. The HFD piston is based on more traditional linear valve designs, offering improved body control while providing a compliant ride. It shines on an enthusiast street car that sees little to no track time, but the damping can be increased to accommodate spirited driving with noticeable results. The CFD piston is an animal. With a low-speed rebound adjustment range that is nearly unmatched at its price point, this valve provides exceptional body and wheel control, all while remaining supple and smooth over even the harshest bumps. The digressive character of the valve provides a natural blow-off mechanism, which dissipates high-velocity impacts with ease. This allows the chassis to remain flat and unbothered when attacking curbing on track, or when flying over bridge joints on the highway.

  • All about the details. Both the 500 and 510 series are monotube dampers with high-pressure nitrogen. They both come standard with aluminum lower mounts and camber plates where applicable, and both use synthetic shock oil. Both carry a 5-year limited warranty. Both are rebuildable, revalveable, and upgradeable. This allows you to buy one set of shocks, and let them to grow with you as you develop as a driver.

  • Choose the right spring rates. This is the key point. Ordering directly from Fortune Auto hands you a spring rate menu (commonly 4k through 16k) and expects you to know what you want, or have time to call and ask. That flexibility is powerful if you know your goals, but it can be a guessing game if you don't.

What Nightrun Garage changed

Pre-validated packages. Rather than handing you a blank slate and expecting you to do the legwork, Nightrun tested and locked in distinct setups for specific driving styles. You pick the character you want; we already worked out the spring rates and valve codes. For anyone who isn't confident specifying their own spring rates, this removes one of the most common sources of buyer's remorse from the coilover experience.

Extended travel. Using 3D scanning and CAD tools, Nightrun has built kinematics models to determine the maximum safe wheel travel on every application we offer. Wheel travel is what separates a vehicle that rides well from one that just rides low, and it's one of the biggest challenges an enthusiast will face when setting up coilovers.

Standard helper springs on every package. Extended travel means extended shock length. By including helper springs as standard on every package, Nightrun Garage coilovers allow you set bump travel and ride height independently. The setup process is slightly more complicated than traditional coilovers that use a single spring and base-height adjustment, but it’s worth the hassle. The result is a coilover package with precisely the correct compressed length for your car and your wheel and tire setup, while giving you the ability to lower the ride height without any risk of tire or fender damage caused by rubbing. Fortune Auto has a helpful video on setting bump and droop travel with helper springs; we strongly recommend you watch it for more information on the process.

Appearance. While this isn’t essential from a performance standpoint, Nightrun Garage selected a reserved dark colorway with vibrant purple accents to blend into the vehicle’s underbody but still have a little flare.

Simplified options. We do give you some choices, of course. While we have pre-selected spring rates and valve codes for each package, you can change the type of springs to suit your preference. Chasing tenths on track? Optional Swift race springs use a proprietary alloy to reduce both unsprung mass and spring reaction time, providing a minute but measurable advantage in a time-trials environment. Also useful for motorsports are the optional spherical bearing mounts. This replaces all rubber compliance bushings with PTFE-lined metal spherical bearings for a more connected driving experience. This upgrade reduces deflection and bind, at the cost of increased NVH. If you live in a rust-prone region, you can replace the standard coated steel damper tubes with optional hard-anodized 7075-T6 aluminum tubes to extend the service life of your coilovers, while also reducing unsprung mass and improving heat dissipation.

Choose your driving style, not your specs

All of this work culminates in 5 distinct packages:

  • Street — Tuned for everyday enjoyment, this is a compliant and comfortable setup that offers improved body control without sacrificing the character of the car’s factory suspension.

  • Street+ — This package uses the same spring rates as Street, but adds Fortune Auto's Concave Flow Digressive piston. This further improves steering feel and reduces body roll, all while maintaining a comfortable ride for everyday use.

  • Touge — A spirited street setup. Compliant enough for the commute, but with a moderate increase in firmness to provide more feedback while taking a twisty detour.

  • Touge+ — The weekend-warrior. This package pairs Touge spring rates with Fortune Auto’s Concave Flow Digressive valve to turn the road or track into your playground. Tuned to provide a sophisticated but agile driving experience, this setup will give you confidence on a canyon run or road course, but won’t break your spine if you do need to drive it to work.

  • Circuit — Built to chase lap times. This package is optimized for race-only vehicles on 200 treadwear tires with minimal to moderate aero. Standard offering is single-adjustable, with double and triple-adjustable remote reservoir configurations available upon request.

Notice that the “+” tiers and Circuit are defined by the CFD piston, not just stiffer springs. The Street and Touge spec are based on 500 series coilovers, whereas the Street+, Touge+, and Circuit are based on 510 series coilovers.

Okay, so what do I buy?

If you know exactly what spring rates, shock lengths, and valving you want and enjoy the customization process, the standard Fortune Auto route gives you a blank canvas on proven hardware. If you already have a number in mind, give us a call or email and we can work with you to order a custom Fortune Auto kit. If you’d rather order direct, Fortune Auto will support you in the same way.

For many enthusiasts, however, the Nightrun Garage spec coilover packages solve the part that's genuinely hard: it removes the guesswork. Calculating optimal wheel travel, correct spring rates, and corresponding valve codes is doable by anyone with a calculator, but it’s not trivial and it takes time and effort. With Nightrun Garage spec coilovers, you're paying for the validation work and the package curation, all built on the race-winning Fortune Auto dampers. For a lot of people, that's exactly the part worth paying for.

Either way you go, you end up on custom, rebuildable, dyno-matched, coilovers that you shouldn't have to buy twice. The Nightrun spec makes the tricky decisions for you, and on enthusiast platforms where wheel fitment varies as much as driver goals and expectations, that peace of mind is often welcome.
